SEO for a one page website: what works and what does not.
We build one-page websites for a living, so we have every incentive to tell you they rank for anything. They do not. Here is what a single page genuinely can do, where it loses to a bigger site, and how to make one page work as hard as ten.
What one page can rank for
A single page carries one primary topic, and Google is comfortable ranking it for that topic and its close variations. In practice a one-page business site can perform for:
- Your business name, which matters more than people think: name searches from vans, word of mouth and social profiles are often the highest-intent traffic a trade gets.
- One clear service intent, such as "emergency electrician" plus the area you state clearly on the page.
- Question phrases you answer directly in headings, especially with FAQ structured data attached.
What it cannot do is chase many unrelated phrases at once. Every additional keyword theme dilutes the page. If you need to rank separately for six services in four towns, that is a multi-page job, and anyone selling you a one-pager for it is selling you the wrong thing.
Why one-pagers often beat bigger sites anyway
The average small business website is not a finely tuned ten-page machine. It is a template with thin, half-duplicated pages, slow images and a services page nobody finished. Against that reality, one focused page has real advantages:
- Speed. One lean page loads fast, and speed is a ranking signal everywhere. Our builds are engineered to score 100 across Google Lighthouse.
- Clarity. One page forces you to state what you do, where and for how much, which is exactly the information searchers and machines want.
- Accuracy. One page is easy to keep true. Stale prices and dead pages on big sites erode trust with both Google and AI assistants.
- One conversion path. Every visitor lands on the message you chose, next to your phone number.
The machine layer: where one-page SEO is really won
The visible copy is half the job. The other half is the layer machines read, and on a one-pager it matters double because everything must live in one place:
- Structured data (JSON-LD): mark up your business, each service, your hours, area and FAQs. This is how one page answers many specific questions without needing a page per question.
- An llms.txt fact file: the machine-readable summary AI assistants look for first. One page plus llms.txt tells ChatGPT, Siri and Gemini everything they need to verify and recommend you.
- Crawler access: robots.txt must welcome the retrieval bots assistants send to read pages. Plenty of sites block them by accident and vanish from AI answers.
- Real text: if your page is mostly images and effects, machines have nothing to read. Aim for genuinely useful written content about your services, not decoration.
- Sections as chapters: use clear headings for each service so one URL still has addressable, quotable parts.
This is the layer our free AI visibility checker tests: llms.txt, structured data, crawler permissions, content density and meta tags, scored out of 100 with an honest verdict.
When you should not use a one-pager
Straight answer: if your growth depends on ranking separately for many services or many locations, on publishing regular content, or on e-commerce, a single page will hold you back. Add pages, or start multi-page. A one-pager is the right tool for a focused local business that wants to be found, verified and called, at a price that is not a project.
Questions people ask
Can a one page website rank on Google?
Yes, for a focused set of terms: your name, one clear service-plus-area intent and question phrases you answer directly. It cannot chase dozens of unrelated keywords. Focus against breadth is the trade-off, and for many local businesses focus wins.
Are one page websites bad for SEO?
Limited, not bad. A well-built one-pager beats a bloated site full of thin pages. The mistake is expecting one page to rank for everything, or building it as one giant image machines cannot read.
What are the pros and cons?
Pros: cheaper, faster, naturally quick to load, easy to keep accurate, one clear conversion path, easy for AI assistants to read when structured properly. Cons: one keyword theme, less room for content depth, no separate pages for separate services or towns.
Can I do my own SEO on one page?
The visible basics, yes. The machine layer, structured data, llms.txt and crawler configuration, is where most owners stop, and it decides whether AI assistants can verify you. Comfortable in code? Do it yourself. Otherwise have it built once, properly: that is what we do for trades and for any business that wants the AI layer.
